FlexPVC® Tech Articles - Hose vs Tube vs Pipe
by Eric, Technical Support for FlexPVC.com a division of PVC Distributors LLC, Pahrump, Nevada
What's the difference between hose, tube (tubing) and pipe?
Flexible PVC Pipe Vs. Flexible PVC Tubing Vs. Hose
At FlexPVC.com we sell both pipe and hose, aka tubing. This can create confusion, but at least on our site, we maintain a standard and uniform practice
of identifying each item so you will know what you are looking at and how to connect it.
When we use the word pipe to describe flexible pvc pipe, aka, FlexPVC, we mean a product that glues into PVC Pipe Fittings.
(FlexPVC®.com Plastic Pipe #1) You do not use a Barb or Insert Fitting with Flexible PVC Pipe.
While it's theoretically possible to insert a barb fitting into Flexible pvc pipe and secure it with a clamp, it's improper use of the pipe. If you really
like to use barb fittings with clamps, look for pvc vinyl tubing or hose. (#2+)
When we say Flexible PVC hose or tubing, we mean a product that is meant to be used with Barb or Insert Fittings.
PVC Tubing (Clear or Braided) is not meant to be glued into PVC fittings, it is to be used a
Barb or Insert fitting with a clamp. Please keep this in mind when you are ordering. Thank you!
There are also some people that make the distinction between "tube" and "hose" or "tubing" and "hose." For some, hose is flexible and tubing is rigid.
However because of the number of people who refer to hose as tubing, we use the terms interchangeably.
Also here is a picture to help illustrate the differences between flexible pvc pipe,
pvc tubing and hose.
