FlexPVC.com LED Grow Light, aka LED Plant Bulb or LED Plant Lamp

Test and review results

As they say, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. We know the claims we are making for this LED Grow bulb are well beyond what others accept as possible. And we know there are A LOT of junk LED products out there being sold as "ultra bright" or "extreme bright" or "super LED" or whatever else name they can come up with to entice you to buy. So we have gone to the expense of buying a light meter and using some filters we had for a previous project to demonstrate the capabilities of these LED grow bulbs.

Here are the results:

This is the light meter in full Nevada sun late winter noon time. You will see it shows 92,300 Lux (the scale is 100x).

This is the light meter in full Nevada sun late winter noon time with blue filter. You will see it shows 19,400 Lux (the scale is 100x).

This is the light meter in full Nevada sun late winter noon time with red filter. You will see it shows 6,900 Lux (the scale is 100x).

Okay, now here is our LED Grow Light at 4" from the light.

You will see 13,900 Lux. This is combined Red and Blue light at 4" from LEDs. You can easily put this light that close because there is no heat coming from this LED. If you look at the Kill-A-Watt, you will see 0.0 watts. This is because these LED Grow Lights use less than 1 Watt each. Below is a picture showing 3 of them in a power strip using 2.2Watts, so each one is using .73 watts

To recap, of the 92,300 Lux the sun provides, the plant actually only uses the red (6,900 Lux) light for budding and flowering and the blue (19,400 Lux) for growth. Combined, that's 26,300 Lux of usable light to the plant from the sun. So just 2 of these LED Grow Lights (13,900 Lux each) will provide about the same light to the plant if you position them 4" from the plant. (Actually two LED grow bulbs produce more useable light than the sun because their output is tuned to the wavelengths the plant actually uses, whereas the sun's light is broad band.) As the plant grows, you will need to supplement the light to the sides. We have a growing station we use and will show you how that is done in future posts. For a typical plant you will use 6 to 12 LED Grow Lights depending on the size of the plant.

Specially developed with a rich red/blue spectrum for optimum growing. 30,000 hour lifespan, that's over 6 years at 12 hours per day. Manufacturers warranty is 2 years, (exchange) and we'll warranty it out to 6 years on a prorated basis.

To all those that are a stickler for the details. Yes, this is a general purpose light meter and yes it's weighted to the human eye response curve. Yes, we could use a quantum light meter for this testing, but they are 400% higher in cost and since we are using the same meter to test both the sunlight and the LED Grow Light the curve will be the same for both. Thus while the absolute numbers would be different, the relative numbers are valid for this comparison. Yes, these filters are broad spectrum general filters and the wavelengths the plants use are very narrow, but we give the sun the best chance it has. Yes, the LED will lose it's intensity as it's moved away from the plant while the sun's light is consistant. However we are not saying you can use just one LED grow bulb per plant. You will need several per plant depending on the type of plant you are growing. Yes, that's expensive initially, however, over the life of the LED grow bulb, compared to HPS or HID, the savings in electricty alone will pay for the bulbs many times over. Not to mention the difference of 250Watts of heat being generated compared to 12 watts being generated from 12 of these. Also with HPS or HID you have to vent that heat to someplace, or crank the AC to compensate. Commerical growers have huge ducting systems and fans (and their accompanying electric bills) to exhaust all that hot air. In both cases you will be using even more energy and your electric bills will knock you out and stick out like a sore thumb. Also because you do not have to vent the heat from HPS or HID, you can now use CO2 enrichement for your plants. Add up all the details and it's clear these LED Grow Lights are superior to HID or HPS.
